"THE NIGHTINGALE" by Kristin Hannah
November 27, 2015
Hi Folks,
I hope those of you who celebrate Thanksgiving had an enjoyable, food and love-filled holiday. I love that it's such a family time with no gift-giving component... just a time for us to celebrate one another and examine all the things for which we're thankful!!
It's book review time for me...this month I'm reviewing the well loved best seller, THE NIGHTINGALE by Kristin Hannah. I think this book deserves the ranking of a CLASSIC piece of literature!
The setting is World War II's Nazi occupied France. The story follows two sisters, documenting how they each respond to challenging times. Their stories are as different as their personalities, but both reflect a strength and beauty that's impressive and unforgettable.
What separates this piece of historical fiction from all the rest is the emphasis Hannah places on the important role women played during wartime. They not only supported their families to survive, but also hid Jewish children and escorted downed Allied pilots to safety, playing a large part in the French Resistance Movement...all while their men were at the front!
Vianne and Isabelle had a difficult upbringing, but their hard times taught them how to navigate through those days of starvation, sacrifice, death, tested loyalty, atrocities, heartbreak, as well as war-time love.
THE NIGHTINGALE has stayed with me and it's been several weeks since I finished it. If you like stories about women, friendship, family, danger and intrigue, this book's for you! It balances the good with the bad...
Highly recommended!!
Thanks for checking in...
Big Hugs,
